Clipping Path

Although it’s our standard to use a path created with the pen tool in Photoshop, there are multiple options. You can choose a few options free of charge like path activated as clipping path, a white or transparent background, as well as the format we should use to save your finished file.

A clipping path is a vector path used to separate objects from their background or layer. This allows the objects to be placed on a new background or color. This path is functionally equivalent to an alpha channel or layer mask, but since these selections are vectors, the outline will be smooth and crisp at any zoom level. The path doesn’t change the image at all, only when activated as a clipping path it will hide whatever isn’t in the selection.

Our cut outs are made a few pixels within the objects so that no lines will become visible when the background color is changed. If photos are taken on a white background the outlines of the products might be too bright for this to work. However, if you tell us the background color you want to use we will optimize the path for it. Clipping paths are used in a number of graphic editing procedures in different programs such as Indesign, Quark XPress, Photoshop, & Illustrator.

Softclipping / Alpha Channel Cutout

While clipping paths give you perfect cutouts of most product images, if you want to cutout people or animals, smooth and crisp outlines aren’t desired anymore.

Therefore, we offer you our Softclipping Service. For hard edges, we might use a helper path, but soft, unsharp or half transparent areas will be done with the help of channels and brush to be detailed and realistic.

As our standard, we will provide the alpha channel for this. The selection can also be saved as a layer mask, which creates a transparent background or be added to adjustment layers. Just let us know with your order and we save the files the way you want. These different saving options are of course free of charge.

SOFTCLIPPING & ALPHA CHANNEL | LEARN MORE...

Softclipping, layer masking or alpha channel creation is used to combine an image with a background to create the appearance of partial transparency. It is very helpful to cutout people, animals and other things with hair, fur or transparent areas. In most cases we use a clipping path for the hard outlines and a color channel or a combination of several channels to create a rough mask first. Then the alpha channel gets optimized and if needed, hair is brushed one by one to get a natural appearance of the outline.

Photoshop allows us to save multiple alpha channels, creating the appearance of partial transparency in one image. The darkest sectors of an alpha channel are transparent while white ones are lightproof and gray ones bring out different levels of transparency. Due to this possibility of different transparency levels fine details like hair and leash are best cutout with channels.
